AI espionage: ex-google employee charged for intelligence theft

New York: The US prosecution has charged a former software engineer with Google, Linwei Ding with four charges of stealing AI secrets from the company and providing them to Chinese firms. Ding was arrested by the authorities on Wednesday and is staring at a 10 year prison sentence along with $250,000 in fines.

The BBC reported that while working for Google, that back in 2022 Ding was also working as Chief Technical Officer for Beijing Rongshu Lianzhi Technology and also started his own tech firm Shanghai Zhisuan Technology. Not only is it a massive fraud and conflict of interest but Ding is also said to have provided trade secrets according to the indictment.

Ding is accused of stealing 500 confidential files on artificial intelligence from google since May 2022 to December 2023 when he was investigated by Google for uploading suspiciously more files on his personal drive. Google have further made it clear that the company was never aware of Ding’s work in China.
