How students, faculty and educational institutions should embrace emergence of Generative AI

The emergence of advanced generative AI applications and evolving AI landscape has sparked discussions about potential revolution and transformations in education. To prepare institutions, faculty, and students for these changes and ensure the alignment of learning processes with career ambitions, several actions can be considered:

Awareness and Understanding: Institutions and stakeholders need to stay informed about the capabilities, limitations, and potential impacts of generative AI technologies. They should actively engage in discussions, research, and professional development to better comprehend the implications for education. Instead of trying to stop the access of these technologies, institutions should embrace it wholeheartedly.

Curricular Adaptation: Institutions should review and update their curricula to integrate emerging technologies and prepare students for AI-driven environments. This may involve introducing topics like AI ethics, human-AI collaboration, data literacy, and critical thinking to help students navigate the evolving landscape. Discussions on responsible AI use, privacy, and data security should be integrated into educational programs. Students should be encouraged to explore the ethical dimensions of AI and consider the potential impact of these technologies on society.

Faculty Development: Faculty members should be provided with opportunities for professional development and training to enhance their understanding of generative AI technologies. This will enable them to effectively teach and mentor students with innovative and engaging methods, leverage AI tools in educational contexts to supplement teaching, and guide students in developing AI-related skills. Institutions should partner with technology companies to develop new educational applications that use generative AI. generative AI could be used to free up teachers’ time so that they can focus on more important tasks, such as providing individualized instruction and guidance to students. Automate some of the tasks that are currently done by teachers, freeing them up to focus on more creative and engaging activities. Faculty can create content that is tailored to their individual needs and interests. Providing them with opportunities to engage with challenging content and to practice applying their knowledge to real-world problems. 

Collaborative and team Projects: Institutions can foster collaborations between faculty, students, and industry partners to create projects that explore the practical applications of generative AI technologies. This hands-on experience will allow students to develop relevant skills and gain exposure to real-world challenges. This is also essential to create the requisite bonding, understanding and confidence building between colleagues, peers, and fellow students.

Emphasize Soft Skills: While technical skills are essential, it’s crucial to remember that the human element remains vital. Institutions should continue to prioritize the development of soft skills such as critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability. These skills complement the technical abilities and help students thrive in an AI-driven future. Institutions and students should embrace the concept of lifelong learning, recognizing that skills and knowledge require continuous updates. Encouraging a growth mindset and providing resources for ongoing learning and upskilling will empower individuals to adapt to changing career requirements. There is also a risk that students may become too reliant on AI systems and may not develop the critical thinking skills that they need to succeed in life.

Embrace AI as a Tool: Instead of fearing displacement, students and faculty can view AI as a powerful tool that can augment their abilities. By incorporating AI tools and platforms into the learning process, educators can enhance personalized learning experiences, facilitate adaptive learning paths, and empower students to explore new domains. Because these applications are trained on massive datasets of text and code, which can include inaccurate or biased information. It is important for educators to teach students how to evaluate the information that they find online and to be critical of the sources that they use.

Personalize learning for each student, Students should use generative AI to support their learning, but not to replace it. They can play with the content and instruction that they need at their own pace that will help in more effective and efficient learning. Students and faculty should adopt tools for creating personalized learning experiences, timely feedback, and assessment of learning more effectively. Generative AI has made it possible to have a new way to deliver education that is more affordable and accessible. These applications can help to reduce the cost of education by providing access to high-quality instruction and resources without the need for costly physical infrastructure.
